Next month, October 7th and 14th, I will be repeating my popular two-day workshop in conjunction with the Los Angeles Center for Photograph (LACP). This workshop focuses on the fundamental development of a book; understanding the artists intent and how that then translates into a book object in the editing, sequencing and layout of the book supported by the book’s design attributes.

The two-day goal of the workshop is for each person to leave with a first rough draft of their book dummy of their personal photographic project. I will provide both creative and practical book design options and project critiques to help those attending to move their book publication forward.

After a morning of studying limited edition artists’ books, trade books and zines, the remainder of the first morning will be spent understanding each artist/photographers publishing objectives. Subsequently I will include discussions on the elements of book design, essence of project editing, image editing and sequencing, the purpose of a physical book-dummy, concluding with a hands-on fabrication of a saddle-stitch dummy book/zine.

The second session delves further into the book dummy development and includes discussions about the business elements of (self/indie) publishing a book, critical book production elements and making a publisher submission. The remainder of the day students will continue working on the development of their dummy book as a collaborative project as well as some one-on-one time with each participant.

The feedback I have received over the years is this workshop has been critical to many artist and photographers for their publishing success; helping provide clarity on their project and providing creative book design options. So whether you are developing your very first book or your book project is one of many, I think you will find our time together to be really inspiring.

This past weekend, May 4-6th, 2018 was the first Acid-Free LA Art Book Market held at Blum & Poe, Los Angeles, near the Culver City Art District.

This is a new left coast art book event that occurred this weekend here in Southern California/Los Angeles. Regretfully this event did not get onto my radar until the last few days until various publishers and galleries announced their booth information. Fortunately for me, the location at Blum and Poe is literally across the street from the gallery that represents me, Fabrik Projects and where my exhibition was opening Saturday morning.

So a two-fer for a Saturday; check-in at Fabrik Projects to ensure everything was copacetic for my exhibition, Middle Ground/En Medio Tierra, and then pop across the street to quickly check out Acid-Free. Since my leporello book dummy for Middle Ground/En Medio Tierra was also being exhibited, this allowed me to Segway to my exhibition while talking self-published books and book designs. A win-win. Or at least I thought so (yuk, yuk).

Acid-Free is a three-day art book market organized by a collective of Los Angeles based independent publishers. Approximately 80 exhibitors, both local and International, with video, music, programming, and some food and drink.  I am still unsure of the reason for this Art Book Market’s name of Acid-Free and no one present could explain it either. Another mystery wrapped in an enigma.

Attendance was lighter than I expected compared to the Saturday mob usually found at the alternative event hosted by Printed Matter and their LA Art Book Fair. (note: LA Art Book Fair was canceled this year due to unforeseen events). Most of my book friends were not aware of this event until the middle of last week.

Nevertheless, still in attendance were some of my local and international favorite publishers and book stores; Lucy Soto with Artbook, Clint Woodside with his Dead Beat Club, Tricia at The Ice Plant, Morel Books, Chris and his Nazraeli Press, TBW Books, Hassla, Winfried Heininger (he was putting more money in the meter and missed photographing him) and his Swiss Kodoji Press and some local galleries were present as well, such as Kopeikin Gallery (Paul giving me his stoic gallery gaze) and Peter Fetterman Gallery.

As anticipated, I left with my share of photobooks tucked in my kit-bag; Deanna Templeton’s They Should Never Touch the Ground, pub 2015 by Dead Beat Club (#31); Lucas Foglia’s Human Nature, pub 2017 Nazraeli Press; Alejandro Cartagena’s Santa Barbara Shame on US, pub 2017 Skinnerboox & distributed by Kopekin Gallery, and Mark Klett’s Traces of Eden: Travels in the Desert Southwest, pub 1986 David R. Godine, Publisher, Inc (also signed by Klett) and copies are still available from Kopekin Gallery.

And of course, just a tiny bit of book publishing gossip. Really, just a tiny bit.

As was previously announced, I gave a curatorial talk about Photo Books as Art for the Photographic and Digital Art (PADA) group of the Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC) at their facility last week.

I had intended to highlight just the photobooks that Gerhard and I had selected as the Most Interesting Photo Books for 2017, but as I set these aside, on the spur of the moment I included some additional photobooks from my collection that provided a more diverse look at the creative side of the photo book object. Thus I included the following photographer’s photobooks; Mariela Sancari’s self-published Moises (one of the best photobooks of 2016), Claire Felicie’s self-published Only the Sky Remains Untouched (second place, Photo Independent’s International Photo Book Competition), Ellen Korth’s self-published CHARKOW (winner, Photo Independent’s International Photo Book Competition), Roger Ballen’s Ballenesque and The Theatre of Apparitions, Max Pam’s Ramadan in Yemen, Kate Nolan’s Neither, Andrej Lamut’s Nokturno, Renee Jacobs’s Slow Burn (limited edition version) Tymon Markowski’s self-published Flow, Harvey Benge’s Home Town Dream, Matej Sitar’s self-published America, My Way and Nancy Rexroth’s IOWA. I also shared by Blurb book dummy In Passing and introduced my photographic project Middle Ground to illustrate the development of a book dummy, which I had all three versions of Middle Ground.

The group was pretty enthusiastic about the international scope and creative designs that I included in this pop-up mini exhibition. The discussions were pretty wide ranging from the book designs, book designers, self-publishing, book printing and just about everything in between. At the conclusion of my presentation, everyone had a chance to inspect and further discuss the featured books.

Later this month I will be providing a mini-seminar, Photo Book Pre-visualization, as well as leading a book discussion panel for Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) on Saturday, March 17th, details here. I will also have available some of my photobooks, including Bluewater Shore, Ciociaria and Guide to Self-publishing an Indie Artist Book.

For those on the left coast next week, I am very happy to be speaking on “PhotoBooks as Art” for the Photographic and Digital Artist Group (PADA) at the Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC) on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 7 pm. For non-members there is a $10.00 fee, with the good news is that you will also be in the drawing for one of my photobooks.

Additionally I will be introducing my current photobook project that is in development, Middle Ground, a political satire (some now calling it a political protest book). FYI, starting to take names for an interest list to be released later this year.

At this meeting, sponsored by the Photographic and Digital Artists Group (PADA), Stockdale will review selections by the editors of The PhotoBook Journal for their “Interesting Photo Books for 2017”. 

The books to be discussed will be available at the presentation and can be previewed on The PhotoBook Journal website

Admission to this event for non-PADA members is $10 and automatically enters the ticket holder in a drawing for one of the speaker’s books.

Two of Stockdale’s limited edition artist books were recognized, respectively, as one of the Best Photography Books for 2017 and 2014. He has curated/juried photobook exhibitions for Photo Independent and Fotografia Internazionale di Roma, Rome, and co-curated with 10×10 Photobooks and FotoBookFestival Kassel (Germany) and was a guest curator for LA Photo Curator.

LA Art Book Fair – Update

For 2018 it was just announced that there will not be a LA Art Book Fair, which is some sad at the end of the year news for the left coast. This has a been a popular event in LA, extremely well attended and a fair that is notable for its diverse publications for sale. I had been looking forward to this event and thus I am very disappointed, but I understand why. Thus now looking forward to the 2019 event!

I regret to announce that Printed Matter’s 2018 LA Art Book Fair has been cancelled due to the unavailability of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, the Fair’s venue of the last five years, and the tragic and unexpected passing of our friend and Fair Curator Shannon Michael Cane.

Over the years, the LA Art Book Fair has grown to become one of the art publishing world’s largest gatherings—a community-driven celebration of innovation and creativity, as well as a rich educational forum for engaging with all facets of art book publishing. We are greatly disappointed that we are unable to mount the Fair in 2018.

The LA Art Book Fair will definitely return in 2019 with renewed energy. Thank you for your understanding and support, and we hope to see you at our NY Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 in the fall.

Notes: 

This book had its debut at the Medium Festival of Photography in San Diego, California, on October 26, 2017, and was received with great enthusiasm. It is a detailed guide to help the artist through all the steps and considerations to keep in mind when thinking about and executing an independently published artist book.

Douglas Stockdale, editorial founder of and prolific contributor to The PhotoBook Journal and SoCal PhotoExchange, who has been our guide through many artistic and publishing intricacies which he has discussed in hundreds of book reviews and articles, really gets to the point in this publication. Fortunately, his collaborator and sponsor in this venture is the renowned printing and communications company Dual Graphics in Brea, California, which already assisted Ansel Adams in artfully transferring his photography to print many years ago.

Doug certainly practices what he preaches. As a successful mentor and leader of workshops dealing with planning, producing, and marketing photo books, and as an author of a number of them himself (In Passing, Ciociaria, Pine Lake, Bluewater Shore), he is able to lay out logical and creative patterns for planning and doing artist books that are designed to help artists avoid many possible pitfalls that he has observed over time. The discussion is divided into five stages, which also constitute the chapters of this book:

  1. Book Pre-Visualization
  2. Marketing (including funding and fundraising)
  3. Book Development (including editing, sequencing the images, and making a book “dummy”)
  4. Book Design (and options)
  5. Book Production

Just to name one very important consideration, this Guide introduces marketing issues early in the process, rather than at the end, as others have done, since marketing information and decisions are integral to all other considerations that follow. Doug also devotes important space to the topics of selecting and sequencing the images to be included in an artist book, a topic that is sketchy in other guides on publishing your own artist book. There are many other planning considerations that he discusses to help the reader untangle potential difficulties.

Another fascinating feature of this book, extremely useful and exclusive, is the addition of sample pages of several different types of paper on which the same color and monochrome images are printed, so that the effect of printing on papers with different surfaces and characteristics can be seen. While the images below are no substitute for getting the actual book and studying the printing on the actual paper, they allow you to begin to see some differences. This feature alone is worth more than the cost of the book, as it is the best demonstration for working closely with a top-notch printing company, and to alert the potential maker of an artist book to all the details that can make a huge difference. There are also detailed descriptions of the papers included, as well as definitions of many terms that make the artist more knowledgeable when dealing with the printing and binding options. Needless to say, the author’s style is to the point, easy to read, and not filled with unnecessary technical jargon.

This book is highly recommended, especially if you are not quite sure about doing an artist book. The overview and the details provided here will help you understand and appreciate the process and will serve as a checklist to guide you through the entire process when you have made the decision to take the plunge, which will be greatly facilitated when consulting this publication during the sojourn.

Open call – The Anamorphosis Prize

Open call: The Anamorphosis Prize for self-published photo-based books.

The Anamorphosis Prize was established to promote excellence, dialogue and excitement in the field of self-published photobooks and photo-based artist books.

The word anamorphosis is derived from the Greek, ana meaning again and morphe meaning form. Anamorphosis is a distortion that demands a change in perspective from the viewer in order to be properly and completely viewed. This can be interpreted today as a whole new way of looking at things.

Self-publishing is creatively liberating. The most interesting and daring developments often occur on the margins. Allowing greater control over a creative vision and expression, self-publishing drives revolutionary change within the orbit of the photobook culture and enables the artist to autonomously sculpt a vocation.

The Anamorphosis Prize will be held 3 years in a row starting in 2015 and the winner will be chosen from a shortlist of 20 books, 3 of which will receive special jury mention. All submitted books will be donated to Franklin Furnace and the shortlist of 20 books will also be included in the MoMA library.

The winner will receive $10,000. Best part: No strings attached!

Requirements for a self-published book to be submitted:

Book must be self-published in an edition of 50 or greater

Self-published means just that: self-published!

No collaboration with any publisher, no matter the size, is allowed

There is NO entry fee (but a copy of the book will be required as part of the submission)

In order to be considered, the (book) entries must be received by November 1st, 2017.

The shortlist of 20 books will be announced by end of November (then you will need to submit two more books; one for display at a pending exhibition and one for the MoMA library).

Winner will be announced January 1st, 2018 (great way to start the year for some lucky person!)

Expect some stiff competition (yes, my submission of Bluewater Shore is #45), but if you have self-published a photo-based book, there is no reason not to enter. So check it out.

NY Art Book Fair – September 2017

NY Art Book Fair, Printed Matters, Inc

Big reminder that Printed Matters NY Art Book Fair is almost upon us, with a preview September 21s and the event runs September 22nd – 24th, 2017 at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens.

While access to the Preview, from 6-9pm, is a whopping 10 bucks (and supports NYABF17), the main event on Sept 22-24th is FREE to attend. Did we mention that this is FREE to attend. Well yes it is!

One of the main book events in NYC! At least when held in LA, this is an opportunity to see a diverse and broad range of indie publications and usually has an area focused on photobooks, although many of the indie photobook publishers are widely dispersed and part of the fun is hunting them down.

Regretfully The PhotoBook Journal team will not be present for this NYC event, but look for us at LA Art Book Fair in early 2018.

FineBooks & Collections – Autumn 2017

Through serendipity I recently came to know of FineBooks & Collections, a quarterly published by Journalistic, Inc. out of their Chapel Hill, NC offices. As you might imagine the magazine reports on all things related to “Fine” Books, Manuscripts, and other published empheria that might end up in a collection.

The events that led to my obtaining a review copy of FineBooks was a survey article being prepared about photobooks, titled Photography in Motion, Collecting Photobooks is a way of Collecting Change by Andrea Volpe. One of the subjects that Volpe discussed was Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library acquisition/donation of the Indie Photobook Library develop by Larissa Leclair (we reported on this earlier). To illustrate the indie type of phtotobooks in Leclair’s collection, FineBooks wanted to use the cover of my photobook Ciociaria, published by Edizioni Punctum that was included in the Yale acquisition. That placed my photobook alongside some very nice photographic company; Alvin Langdon Coburn, Lewis Hine, Danny Lyons, Richard Avedon and Gary Winogrand.

Other articles of note for photographers and book makers: Not the End for Endpapers, a short interview of Daile Kaplan who is the head of photography at the Swann Auction Galleries and her Pop Photographica collection, a review of a Henry Thoreau exhibition that includes an interesting daguerreotype of him and her In View column (The Sum of its Parts) by Volpe.

Bottom line for those make and collect photobooks, this magazine is an enjoyable and diverse read that provides a bit more expansive book landscape.
