Regretfully I need to announce that my LACP (Los Angeles Center of Photography) one-day workshop Marketing Your Photo Book has had to be rescheduled and will NOT occur the week after on July 22 as was previously planned.

The new date for this workshop is Sunday, October 29th, 2017.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience and I really hope that everyone can make the last minute adjustments.

Best regards, Douglas Stockdale

LACP workshop: Marketing Your Photo Book

Filed under: Photo Book NEWS — Tags: , — Doug Stockdale @ 1:27 pm

Just a brief followup reminder from my earlier announcement in April that there is still space available for the LACP (Los Angles Center of Photography) workshop Marketing Your Photo Book which I am leading. Marketing and selling a photobook has similarities to photographic prints but there are enough nuances that if not addressed can end up with you having boxes and boxes of books in your garage, not in your audiences hands. You don’t want to have your first photobook become your last photobook.

Marketing Your Photo Book – This is a one-day workshop being held on (Note: schedule change; now Sunday, October 29th, 2017 Saturday, July 22nd ) in Los Angeles. This workshop is is intended for photographers and artist who are preparing to publish their work in book form, whether self-publishing or working with an established book publisher. I will provide creative and practical approaches to marketing your photo book.

The morning will be spent understanding your publishing objectives and how that translates to a marketing plan. This will include discussing the basic elements of a marketing plan; what is being published and sold, who might purchase it, where to sell it, how to price it and how and when to promote it. Issues to be discussed include; how soon to start working on a plan, book economics and buyers price points, buy or create a mailing list, selling self-published books, and do’s and don’ts of using social media and web sites. During the workshop, I am planning a series of breakout sessions to enable development of each person’s specific marketing plan for their book.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Cheers!

I am very excited to announce that I will be providing two more photobook workshops in partnership with LACP (Los Angeles Center for Photography) at their Los Angeles facilities later this year. Both have a 20% early-bird sign up until May 26th.

Marketing Your Photo Book – This is a one-day workshop being held on Saturday, July 22nd. This workshop is is intended for photographers who are preparing to publish their work in book form, whether self-publishing or working with an established book publisher, and will provide creative and practical approaches to marketing their photo book.

Introduction to Photo Book Design – This Fall (October 1 and 8th), I will be repeating my popular two-day workshop that focuses on the development of each person’s book dummy for their personal photographic project and provides both creative and practical book design options.

After a morning of studying limited edition artists’ books, trade books and zines, the remainder of the first session will be spent understanding students’ publishing objectives and how that translates to a book object. This will include time discussing the elements of book design and the purpose of a book-dummy, concluding with a hands-on fabrication of a saddle-stitch dummy book/zine. The second session delves into the business elements of (self) publishing a book and photo book production. The remainder of the day students will continue working on the development of their dummy book as a collaborative project.

I hope you can join me as these are intense, yet fun, workshops.

The workshops are being held at the LACP facilities: 1515 Wilcox Ave, Los Angeles, CA

Let me know if you have any questions,

Cheers!

Printing donations for Book design workshop

I have been asking around to various publishers and book printing companies for some commercial signatures to help illustrate some aspects of my pending Introduction to Photo Book Design workshop. A signature is somewhat foreign to photographers who have not been involved in commercial printing of a book; a printed sheet printed on a litho press which has multiple pages (images) that once folded and trimmed will become the interior pages of a photobook.

I am happy to announce that I have some really great signature donations from my friends at Dual Graphics (Brea, CA) and Peanut Press (David Carol and Ashly Stohl). These samples will really help illustrate my discussion regarding aspects of a commercially printed photobook; one-sided, two-sided signatures and what the resulting photobook (David Carol’s No Plan B, 2016 published by Peanut Press). Again, my sincere thanks to both Dual Graphics and Peanut Press!

Also some good news: there is still room for a couple more photographers and book makers to join me in what should be an interesting workshop: This will be held in conjunction with the Los Angeles Center for Photography (LACP), Introduction to Photo Book Design: two consecutive Saturdays (April 1st and 8th, 2017) at the LACP facilities in Los Angeles.

Cheers

Left Coast News: 2 photobook workshops in February

The Epilogue, Laia Abril & book design by Ramon Pez

In conjunction with Art Book LA 2017, there will be two photobook workshops occurring on back to back weekends. One workshop lead is by the team of Ramon Pez and Michael Brown, sponsored by Magnum, which is being held at LACP and the other workshop is being led by Bruno Ceschel.

I am really familiar with the amazing art designer Ramon Pez’s creative photobook designs and I have been in discussions with him regarding his design work for the photographer Laia Abril’s various book projects, including 2014’s top contemporary photobook The Epilogue. Pez also worked on the design of Cristina de Middel’s brilliant 2012 self-published photobook The AfronautsMichael Brown is a member of Magnum.

The Pez & Brown workshop will take place Friday, Feb 24th and Saturday, Feb 25th at the LACP (Los Angeles Center for Photography) facility in LA; 1515 Wilcox Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028. The two workshop leaders plan to spend the bulk of the two day workshop providing the participants with constructive advice in conjunction with group critiques of the participants projects.

The book design workshop by Bruno Ceschel, founder of Self Publish, Be Happy blog, is scheduled the weekend before Art Book LA 2017. His two day workshop is on Saturday, Feb 18th and Sunday, Feb 19th in LA. After a discussion of editing, sequencing & book design, the class will then develop their projects using Adobe In-Design or other publishing software.

As a reminder, my two day workshop, Introduction to Photo Book Design, is scheduled with LACP over two consecutive Saturdays later this spring; April  1st & 8th, at the LACP facilities in LA.

Cheers!

LACP workshop: Introduction to PhotoBook design

I am very excited to announce that I will be leading an Introduction to Photo Book Design workshop in conjunction with the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) next Spring 2017. The workshop will be held over two consecutive Saturdays, April 1st and April 8th in Los Angeles at the LACP facilities.

This workshop is intended for photographers preparing to transition their photographic images and projects to book form. I am planning that this two-day workshop will teach participants creative and practical approaches to photo book design, in anticipation of working with a book publisher, self-publishing or creating an artist-book.

My goal for this practical workshop is that everyone will understand the basics of photobook design, book publishing and reasons for a book dummy and should be well on their way to develop a book that reflects their personal creative vision.

Currently there is a 20% early bird registration available, so if you plan to be in the LA area next spring and would like to join me for this fun & challenging workshop, check it out!

If you have any questions, post a comment for me.

Cheers!

btw, if the photograph of the stack of photobooks above look familiar, this was my selection of interesting photobooks for 2013.
