A number of the winners of this competition have been previously featured on The PhotoBook (links are provided, above) while I have noted the photographers and their photobook which have reviews that are still in process. So more to come, stay tuned!

The competition judging panel had a slight change and included (in addition to me):

  • Chris Davies, Publisher, Fabrik Magazine
  • Sarah Hadlee, Independent Curator and Founder of the Filter Photo Festival
  • Sarah Lee, Curator

This was a really interesting and wonderful opportunity to review a broad and diverse group of photobooks. I feel fortunate to be able to get a strong pulse of what is happening in the greater photo book community.

LA Art Book Fair 2017

Our report (Gerhard Clausing, Contributing Editor, and myself) from last Saturday’s LA Art Book Fair 2017. As in the past this Fair can be overwhelming and it is truly difficult to see the entire Fair in one day, least to have emphasis on just the photographic books. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with photographers, publishers and designers and discuss their recent publications. It does not help that the Fair guide book I purchased subsequently went missing. Sigh.

la-art-book-fair-2017-focus-photography

Noted this year that the upper mezzanine where the photographic book focus is usually located was enlarged this year, but still not enough room for everyone, such that Nazraeli Press and a few others were still on the ground floor catacombs. I think that there are some larger traditional photobook publishers, such as MACK, that were present this year in part due to the demise of the Paris Photo LA fair, thus making the LA Art Book Fair more of the go-to for photographic book Fairs on the West coast. As a result, there was a larger and diverse group of photobook publishers and photographic groups present, such as the Russian Independent Selfpublished, AROK (Lithuania) and a larger contingent of publishers from Switzerland to name only a few.

One of the benefits of attending this Fair is looking at the broad and diverse publications and other types of art, no matter how extreme, as it provides ideas of where the pulse of published art is evolving.

Needless to say, the exhibit space was jam packed and by noon so were all of the aisles. Fortunately Gerhard & I arrived early. Slow Culture and the Deadbeat Club hosted the Fotomat for the film lovers and the food trucks met the immediate needs of the foodies.

Below is our photojournalist report of the photobook exhibit spaces where we spent some quality time at (which usually meant we acquired some photobooks!).

Cheers!

LA Art Book Fair coming soon to the Left Coast!

February 24 – February 26, 2017
Preview: Thursday, February 23, 2017, 6–9 pm
Location: The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA:

The Geffen Contemporary is located at 152 North Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012

This is the fifth annual LA Art Book Fair (which I missed last year, darn), and best of all, its Free!

Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair is a unique event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines presented by more than 300 presses, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from over 20 countries. A very diverse collection of photographic and art books. If you have not been to this event before, it will blow your mind.

Focus: Photography
A curated cross-section of photo-based books and magazines, this year’s Focus: Photography has expanded, and includes: ARÖK (Lithuania), Goodbye Ranch (Arizona), SUPER LABO (Japan), Bemojake (UK), Remote Photobooks (New Zealand), The Heavy Collective (Australia). This should be interesting!

Slow Culture & Deadbeat Club (a SoCal group of film users) are proud to present “THE FOTOMAT”.  A pop-up installation in the Geffen courtyard paying homage to vintage drive-thru photo kiosks with actual 24 hour film developing services. Photographer friends will be guest clerks and sell exclusive prints to the fair.  Also available will be film & photography accessories, zines, photo books and other photo related ephemera.

As always, a fun and entertaining event and I hope to see you there and if you see us, don’t forget to give a big shout-out ;- )

Cheers!

LACP workshop: Introduction to PhotoBook design

douglas-stockdale-1

Copyright 2013 Douglas Stockdale

I am very excited to announce that I will be leading an Introduction to Photo Book Design workshop in conjunction with the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) next Spring 2017. The workshop will be held over two consecutive Saturdays, April 1st and April 8th in Los Angeles at the LACP facilities.

This workshop is intended for photographers preparing to transition their photographic images and projects to book form. I am planning that this two-day workshop will teach participants creative and practical approaches to photo book design, in anticipation of working with a book publisher, self-publishing or creating an artist-book.

My goal for this practical workshop is that everyone will understand the basics of photobook design, book publishing and reasons for a book dummy and should be well on their way to develop a book that reflects their personal creative vision.

Currently there is a 20% early bird registration available, so if you plan to be in the LA area next spring and would like to join me for this fun & challenging workshop, check it out!

If you have any questions, post a comment for me.

Cheers!

btw, if the photograph of the stack of photobooks above look familiar, this was my selection of interesting photobooks for 2013.

My take-away from Photo Book Independent

Books acquired Photo Book Independent 2016

copyright the photographers, 2016 Douglas Stockdale

A quick shout out of thanks to all of the photobook photographers & artist at Photo Book Independent. Above is a photo of my book acquisitions, trades & gifts. Not in any particular order, these include:

Aline Smithson’s Self & Others, published by The Magenta Foundation (lucky me, I have been coveting this book since it publication last year)

Kurt Simonson’s Northwoods Journals, published by Flash Powder Projects (very short meet up with Kurt, but as he is local in Long Beach, I may get an opportunity to meet-up and discuss his book project in more detail)

Ara Oshagan’s Mirror, self-published (has incorporated an interesting technology that links to music video composed by his subject, Cor Mkhitarian)

Choi Young-hwan’s two books, BABEL and REQUIEM, self-published

Sara Terry’s two artist books, Elvis in the Tree (10X Editions) and from her 2012 Guggenheim fellowship, Forgiveness & Conflict: Lessons from Africa, composed of an interesting assortment of six artist books and one film DVD, self-published. (Really lucky me to have Terry’s limited edition Guggenheim project in my collection!) btw, if you are interested in Terry’s Guggenehim artist book, you need to act fast as these are going quickly.

Kurt Simonson’s and Aline Smithson’s photobooks were juried into the Photo Book Independent book competition (which I was one of the judges).

I enjoyed participating and meeting up with all of these photographers as well as the many folks who stopped by my exhibition table to discuss photobook projects.

More about these books in the months to come.

Cheers!

Curatorial walk thru at Photo Book Independent

photo-independent-logo6

The schedule for talks, book signings and curatorial discussions has just been posted for Photo Book Independent, a part of Photo Independent later this month in LA (Hollywood)

I am honored to have an opportunity to provide two curatorial walk-through’s to discuss the photobooks that were recently juried-in for the book competition as well as those that are being exhibited by the participating photographers.

The first curatorial walk will be held first on Friday night at 6pm just prior to the VIP opening of the exhibition space at Raleigh Studios (yes, a functioning sound stage in the midst of the film capital). The second walking discussion will be on Sunday morning at 10:30 am just prior to the opening for the general public. I am planing on an hour discussion, but be prepared, it could last a little longer depending on the questions and answers.

For the juried-in photo books, since I was part of the judging and had developed the judging process, I am planning to provide a little back-ground on the judging criteria. How did we decide which books were interesting and provocative and which did not seem to past muster and capture our attention?

The good news, my curatorial discussions are free to participate, but the space is limited and if you want to join for what I hope is an interesting, fun and informative event, you need to sign up for it NOW: http://photoindependent.com/talks-and-book-signings/

Leave a comment if you have any questions.

Cheers!

Judging – Photobook Independent submissions

Filed under: Photo Book NEWS, Photo Books — Tags: , , , — Doug Stockdale @ 9:33 pm

2016 Photobook Independent judging panel

As I announced last month, I was added to the judging panel as a photobook specialist for the Photobook Independent book competition. The judging occurred yesterday up in Los Angeles and it was an interesting event as well as a pretty daunting task in my opinion. I can not really reveal any results yet (soon!), but I was really impressed with the quality and diversity of the book submissions.

In the photo above, left to right, is Kirk Pederson, Chris Davies, Sarah Lee, yours truly, Marissa Caichiolo, Kio Griffith, and Sarah Hadley. Not included in the photo was Rudi Bianchi.

We are now working on a schedule for me to provide a curatorial walk-thru of the winning book submissions in conjunction with the other photobooks that will be available during Photobook Independent later this month in LA. I hope to announce that shortly, so continue to stay tuned.

Cheers!
